Training with the Heart

mother and child

Train a child in the way he should go, and when he is old he will not turn from it. Proverbs 22 : 6 NIV

Training our children is similar to  training our pets because the training should be done in a repetitive, consistent, and loving manner. However, if the training is not done with kindness and respect, they will discount everything heard  from us. Our loving words will not envelop their hearts. To become a respectful and loving person, our children need to see our words put into action. This makes  a complete connection in their world and heart, and reinforces our teachings.

I often wondered if our life lessons were being heard by our children. Was our positive inspiration making an imprint on their spirit, or did they hear blah, blah, blah. We prayed for help and some sign that it had. It took a long time, but I got my sign. Recently, when my oldest daughter stood correcting our four-year-old  granddaughter. I listened as my daughter repeated word for word the wisdom that had been passed onto them. She stopped mid-sentence and peeked a smile in my direction that warmed my heart. I knew her heart heard our teachings and listened.

Lord, help us to use kindness, respect, and love while teaching our children. Help us to live what we want them to learn, so they will embrace it within their spirit.  Amen
